HTTP QUERY Method: A Simple Guide

HTTP QUERY Method: A Simple Guide 🚀
Most developers are familiar with HTTP methods like GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE.
Now there is another HTTP method worth knowing: QUERY.

The “QUERY” method is designed for read-only requests where the query can be sent in the request body instead of putting everything into the URL.
Why do we need QUERY?
With a simple request, GET works perfectly:
GET /users?city=Noida&age=25
But imagine a request with many filters, sorting rules, pagination, date ranges, and other conditions.
The URL can become long and difficult to manage.
With “QUERY”, we can send that information in the request body:
QUERY /users
{
“city”: “Noida”,
This makes complex queries easier to structure and send.
GET vs QUERY
GET
GET /users?city=Noida&minAge=25
Good for simple queries.
QUERY
QUERY /users
{
“city”: “Noida”,
Useful for complex or large queries.
QUERY vs POST
Before QUERY, developers sometimes used POST for complex searches:
POST /users/search
The problem is that POST is generally used for operations that may modify server state.
“QUERY” is specifically designed for safe and idempotent querying.
In simple terms:
GET → Simple read/query
Real-World Example
Consider an analytics application where users can filter data by:
Date range
Country
Status
Multiple conditions
Sorting
Pagination
Instead of creating a very long URL, the complete query can be sent as structured data:
QUERY /analytics
{
“dateRange”: {
The server can then process this query and return the requested data.
One Important Thing
“QUERY” is a newer HTTP method, so not every API client, framework, proxy, or tool may support it yet.
For example, some versions of Postman may not show “QUERY” in the method dropdown.
That doesn’t mean the HTTP method doesn’t exist—it means the particular tool may not have built-in UI support for it yet.
In One Sentence
«QUERY provides a standardized way to send complex, read-only queries in the request body instead of putting them in the URL.»
For simple requests, GET is still perfectly suitable. QUERY becomes interesting when the query itself is complex or large.
